The following animation is a conceptual representation of how the new dataset works. The concept gives the flexibility hospitals need to pick and choose additional data elements beyond those in the new National Trauma Data Standard dataset.

Medical Info/Devices Many medical systems (911 call center data, on-scene reports, patient records, patient monitor data, etc.) are able to electronically transfer data to Trauma Registry Software.
Trauma Registry SoftwareLocal hospitals can choose to use any NTDS-Compliant Software according to their needs. The compliant software can export data using the XML standard to a single state database.
State DatabaseStates can transfer trauma registry data back and forth between hospitals and to the National Trauma Data Bank using XML.
National Trauma Data BankThe "National Trauma Registry Elements" will be uploaded to the National Trauma Data Bank using XML.
Other State DatasetsAdditional State datasets will be able to transfer data to and from the National Trauma Data Bank using XML.
